Story

I've run two 10k's and a half Marathon before. None were easy, but they were worth it. As a team, we raised over £12k for the British Heart Foundation in memory of my amazing brother Gareth.

Since then, I've been diagnosed with a silly bendy syndrome, and gained:  3 walking sticks, 1 pair of crutches, 2 sexy full-length knee braces, 1 uber-professional beanie ice pack, 5 days in hospital with 3 scars from 1 major knee surgery, 4 physiotherapists, 3 hydrotherapists, 2 consultants, some incredible nurses, a ludicrous amount of prescription pain meds, many hours in bed, 2 'Wonky Medicine' blogs (1 for The Huffington Post), 2 wheelchair basketball teams and thanks to my incredible friends and their crowdfunding work, Ruby the beautiful day chair, two light-up front castors and a FreeWheel attachment for her.

So the half marathon didn't go to plan, but I got through it, I raised money, I got wonky, my life has hugely changed, and you know what? It's still worth it.

I've learnt the hard way what it is to live with a 'visible difference'. People stare at me and my sticks, and my funny walk, and my light-up chair, and that's not always easy. Some days, we all just want to be inconspicuous. Changing Faces is an incredible charity which works with people who live with 'visible differences', and is there for them throughout their lives, offering everything from Skin Camouflage to Counselling, and also works with the public to raise awareness of the issues these people face (check out their Twitter @FaceEquality).

They deserve so much support, so I am taking on a bloody massive challenge for me; I am going to push myself around a 10k race, in a Day Chair (which weighs c.10kg), using only my arms. No help, no being pushed by anyone except me. My arms are going to hurt, but they are worth it, and I need to prove that this Wonky Medic on Wheels can still race.

If you can help me fundraise for them, that's great. If you can't, then that's fine too - just remember the charity, and support them when and if you can (they really are lovely on Twitter, say hi to them!).

Thanks pals.
