We are doing 30 things throughout June to support Parkinson's Disease research at the University of Sheffield. Our researchers are leading the way in developing personalised treatments for Parkinson's Disease.

Story

I will be running 100km over the month of June (that is a really, really long way for me - I ran about 50km in April and that was me already trying hard!).

***Addition***Sam is also doing a Keepie-Up Challenge - he started at the beginning of lockdown when he could do 4 ..... he has a go every day and at the beginning of June was up to 41. We will update you how many he is up to at the end of June****

We are doing this to support Parkinson's Disease research and in memory of Tom's Grandpa and Sam's Great Grandpa who we sadly never got to meet because of Parkinson's Disease.

145,000 people in the UK are living with Parkinson’s Disease and it is estimated 1 in 37 of us will develop it in our lifetimes.

We have all seen in the last few months how important it is to progress with medical research. There hasn’t been a new treatment for Parkinson’s for 50 years. Current treatments only mask the symptoms and don’t tackle the root cause of the disease. It’s a one size fits all approach for patients.

Sheffield University researchers are looking into what causes the disease within the brain cells. They are also testing a range of drugs to see which ones can help the different ‘types’ of the disease.

They have  already had one drug that’s gone to clinical trial (UDCA – a liver disease medication) so the team is hopeful they will be able to get more drugs to this stage over the coming years.

£10 could help stock research labs with essential supplies.

£15 could pay for one hour of research by early career scientists

£30 could fund use of a machine to assess the effect of a drug treatment on individual patients’ cells

£60 will help to cover the cost of a clinical trial for a day

£130 could purchase chemicals to help researchers run 20 experiments to understand how the body disposes of damaged cells in Parkinson’s patients

£300 will help fund a patient biopsy so researchers can develop
individual treatments

New treatments are needed to stop Parkinson's in its tracks.Your donations will support this important work, helping researchers to lead the way in developing new treatments for Parkinson's Disease.

Thank you
