We provide transformational support to people affected by mental illness.

Story

Although 1 in 4 people suffer from mental illness, 4 in 4 people will be impacted by a friend, family members, partners or colleagues mental illness. Mental health has been a topic close to my heart for several years now, and when I was diagnosed with acute depression and anxiety, it became personal. I have been lucky enough to be surrounded with all the love and support I could ever ask for from my family and friends, however not everyone is this lucky. Having a mental illness is still stigmatized and many people are forced to deal with this alone. It is this realization that led me to the Stafford Centre here in Edinburgh, and prompted my desire to make meaningful change in people's lives.

Support in Mind Scotland works to support and improve the quality of life for anyone who is suffering from a mental illness as well as supporting those whose lives are impacted by another's illness. The Stafford Centre is the base of SIMS services in Edinburgh. It is a community resource for anyone who needs help with their illness, is looking to integrate with the community, gain greater self-confidence or find someone to talk to. The centre runs both physical and mental well-being groups, one-to-one guidance for employment, counselling, and general support for those in need, as well as carers, family members and friends.

I have had the pleasure of volunteering at the Stafford Centre for the last 6 months, and during this time have met some brilliant minds, and friendly faces. The Centre is vital for Edinburgh locals, and is a safe haven for many who are often isolated. Through my work in the Drop-In Centre, I have been able to see how important communities like the Stafford Centre are. I have used a variety of resources in my own journey with mental illness, and am running so I can give back to a community that has helped me become the person I am today.

Any donations (in any currency!) are appreciated, and they will go towards two events. The first trip I am hoping to help fund is the annual sailing trip for service users. This trip takes place on Loch Lomond, and gives people the chance to learn a new skill, explore nature, and form stronger friendships. I am also hoping to fund various programmes at the centre to improve the everyday lives of the service users.
