Story

A little bit about our Dad's story...

Our loving dad, Harbhajan Singh Kang (Ken) passed away last month, two and quarter years after his cancer diagnosis in April 2014. As a never-smoker, we were shocked to hear a diagnosis of lung cancer. One of our goals is to raise awareness of lung cancer, this is not just a smoker’s disease, 'anyone with lungs is at risk!'

Common symptoms include:

  • a cough for three weeks or more
  • a change in a cough you’ve had for a long time
  • a chest infection that doesn’t get better, or repeated chest infections
  • feeling breathless and wheezy for no reason
  • coughing up blood
  • chest or shoulder pain that doesn’t get better
  • a hoarse voice for three weeks or more
If you present any of the above symptoms we urge you to see your GP.

Despite his diagnosis our dad never faltered on his approach to life, his motto remained 'why worry.' He dealt with his condition with great dignity, determination and a never ending consideration for others.

On the Saturday before his passing we had a very enjoyable day at the beautiful rose gardens. The following day his condition deteriorated rapidly, we contacted the Compton Nurses who made arrangements for him to be transferred to the Hospice. However due to the rate at which things seemed to be changing, we made the decision to keep dad at home with the support of the hospice.

Compton Hospice provided us with around the clock guidance and reassurance, and were also able to provide a night nurse service. This service proved invaluable to ensuring that our father was kept comfortable in his final days and he passed away peacefully with his family around him on Tuesday 12th July 2016.

Compton Hospice is a Wolverhampton based charity who has been supporting patients facing a life-limiting illness, and their families, for over 30 years. The Hospice costs £6m a year to run, just a third of this is funded by government grants and the remainder is from donations. We would like to help Compton Hospice achieve its fundraising goals and support people who find themselves in a similar situation.

Our fundraising goal is £1390, this will allow the Hospice to purchase a ward bed which has been specially adapted for patient use. We hope that you are able to help support a cause so close to our dad's heart.
