We support unpaid family carers of all ages to cope with their caring role

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

For my year as Mayor of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk, I nominated two charities, West Norfolk Young Carers, and The Magpie Centre – West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled, both close to my heart, that I would support throughout my year. Due to Covid, some fundraising events that might have taken place were not possible, so I am taking part in the Parkrun Kings Lynn on Saturday 7th May.

This page is for West Norfolk Carers

West Norfolk Young Carers is one of two charities of my year, as I recognise the essential role that young carers fulfil. Young carers make a vital contribution to our society not only in wellbeing but also of great economic benefit to our country. They provide the support that will often allow families or individuals to remain in their own homes where they prefer to be.

Often a young carer not only provides necessary care to a parent or sibling but also assumes the role of household duties and getting their siblings ready for school. Some do not recognise or identify themselves as carers as they feel it’s just natural or normal that they should do what they do. They often do not know what support could be available to them. Their caring duties can reduce their opportunity to have a normal childhood or social life and can affect their attendance or performance at school where teachers may be unaware of their caring role. It is important that we try to ensure that these carers are identified to ensure that as many as possible receive the support that can help them in their caring role.

West Norfolk Carers is a small independent charity, with a strong history of supporting unpaid carers and their families. The youngest, young carer they support is 6 years old and the oldest person is 97 years old. Working across such a range of ages, they tailor support to the individual so each person gains support appropriate to their
needs. They work to help family carers to improve their emotional and physical well-being, resilience, and abilities to cope with their caring roles - whilst also having a ‘life of their own. They are dedicated to supporting family carers of all ages and helping them to cope with their caring responsibilities
.

I have seen and been very impressed with the help and support West
Norfolk Carers give to young carers and hope you will support this deserving charity.
