Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

I am Hayley, one of RSPCA Central, West & NE London Branch's Animal Welfare Officers. I have been at the branch for almost 4 years now and wanted to combine my passion for animals with my love for cycling...so what better way than to set up my turbo trainer and bike in a cat pod for the day and pedal away for 8 hours! By being stuck in a cat pod cycling all day i'll not only learn to appreciate what it must feel like for a cat to be shut in one all day but hopefully we'll raise some money at the same time!

It's going to be a real challenge and i'm not afraid to say i'm very nervous! I've cycled  long distance on road but not stationary which can sometimes be harder as there are no downward hills to give your legs any kind of release, you just have to keep going...all day...

My other big motivation for organising and completing this challenge is that we would really like to raise about £4,000 to buy a dental machine for the unit so that our vets can provide dental care for our cats on site. Currently we are transporting our cats to a local vet to have dental treatment which can be very expensive, just imagine the savings to the branch if we had our own equipment at our disposal! It will also free up staff to concentrate on other animal welfare matters who are running back and forth to vets several times a week dropping off and collecting cats.

According to International Cat Care: "dental disease is a very common problem in both young and old cats. It is thought that as many as 85% of cats aged three years and older have some sort of dental disease".

Since our Branch in North London takes in around 1,500-2,000 cats a year, you can appreciate that many of those cats will require dental treatment of some kind before they can be adopted out to new homes.

Many of the cats that come through here are also very old and in need of quite substantial dental extractions and treatment so I can't stress how valuable this equipment would be to us and to the cats of London!

We will be streaming the cycle live into our charity shops all day and on our facebook page so make sure you keep up to date with my progress (if you fancy a giggle, it'll be worth it for that!) and please donate whatever you can! My target is £4,000 but any extra we make will go towards helping as many animals as we possibly can in any way that is needed.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. About the charity

Each year the Central London Branch of the RSPCA helps around 1,500 cats, dogs, rabbits and other animals. One of our main activities is running a cat neutering scheme, which helps people who cannot afford vets' fees, to have their animals neutered. This service is available in the Greater London area, with the support of other RSPCA branches and other charities. We also do as much as we can to help animals in distress, and find them permanent or temporary homes. We are a separate charity from RSPCA Headquarters with responsibility for raising funds to pay for the work that we do. We constantly apply our funds to help as many animals as possible in the Branch area.
