The Himalayan Trust UK

The Himalayan Trust UK supports the basic needs and education of the mountain people of the Nepal Himalaya, so helping them help themselves.

Story

In the early hours of Friday 18 April, an avalanche struck and 13 Sherpas lost their lives in the Khumbu Icefall on Everest.  Three more Sherpas are missing, and must be assumed dead.

We all know the Khumbu Icefall is a dangerous place and that it will, in its own unpredictable way, claim lives, but this doesn't lessen the impact of the tragedies engulfing the families of these 16 men.

The Himalayan Trust UK is well placed to help, and together with its sister foundations around the world, has launched a fundraising appeal to help the Sherpa families affected by this recent tragedy on Everest.

Funds raised will provide scholarships to the children covering educational and living expenses, ensuring they have a guaranteed schooling despite the loss of their fathers' livelihood.  The tragedy is a reminder that while Everest has increased in popularity and accessibility over the last 60 years, Nepalis continue to bear much of the risk involved in reaching the summit.

Please give generously.
