Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

If running my first marathon was not challenging enough, I decided it would be fun (?!?) to cycle the North Coast of Scotland. Then came the crux, to have long enough to cycle the 500 miles around the North Coast of Scotland and to escape the midges the cycle ride would have to be just 2 and a bit weeks after the marathon. All the training has been over the winter when the days are short (thank goodness the winter has not been as cold as last year). I knew that if I did an event for charity it would need to be a big one - I finally felt I had challenged myself enough to do some fundraising.

So why did I choose Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled? Many of you will know that I am a volunteer coach and trustee there. I see both the physical and social benefits of riding. I suppose I have really come to appreciate the social side of sport being a member of Springfield Striders and Trisport Epping. Having the support, someone to chat too, someone to push you in your challenges and share in your success. I see the same thing happening at Barrow Farm and I know many of these riders do not get the opportunity to play and take part in other sports due to lack of specialist coaching and facilities.

Barrow Farm can offer equestrian sporting opportunities due to its specialist facilities and coaches but to ensure that it doesn't become elitist riding fees are kept to a minimum and the shortfall has to be made up of fundraising. That is why I decided to use my run/cycle challenge to raise funds for Barrow Farm, to ensure that disabled children and adults get the opportunity to take part in a sport with all the associated health benefits.
