Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for the Fred Whitton cycling challenge 2017.

Described by some pro cyclists as the 2nd hardest cycling sportive in Europe, this isn't just 112 miles cycling through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Lake District, it is one of the most painful and arduous cycling undertakings what the UK can offer!

There are over 10 excruciating peaks to conquer, all of which put the gradient on Jedburgh High Street to shame (some of them are 25% and 30% inclines!).

It includes the two TOUGHEST climbs in the UK (Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass) - n.b. you may need to copy & paste the link below to view the URL:

All together, it has 6 in total from the UK's top 100!

Starting and finishing in Grasmere, the route is 112 miles (180 km) and takes in:

The short story of this event:

"The Fred Whitton Challenge is a charity cyclosportive event held annually in the English Lake District, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and the Dave Rayner Fund. It is held in memory of Fred Whitton, racing secretary of the Lakes Road Club, who died of cancer at the age of 50 in 1998. The event started in 1999 and has been held every year since, except for 2001 when it was cancelled due to the foot-and-mouth epidemic.

The event has raised a grand total of over a million pounds and is Macmillan's biggest fundraiser in Cumbria. "(Source: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Whitton_Challenge )

I try to do my best to get the best result on this challenge. But what it means exactly:

I make 2 short rides at least on every day,

I do 2 long rides (50+ km / 31+ mi) / every week,

I go to GYM x4 / every week for cross-training,

At least every 2nd day I have 30-60 mins. of short-distance run (5k, max. 10 km / 6.2 mi only usually)

These short and entertaining video gives a view of what Hardknott looks like to someone on a bike:

The event is hoping to make again some breakthrough, since it's started more than 16 years ago, the charity event passed the £ 1 million fundraising barrier, and with your support I hope we can make a small contribution to their current target.

Many thanks, and wish me luck!
