Hi, I'm
Jackie.
My
challenge is to run the Birmingham 1/2 marathon on October 24th.
I'm
running to support two charities and as part of a fundraising programme I'm
leading at school.The
charities are the Oxfam Pakistan floods appeal and Cantral Asia Institute who
build schools for girls in remote Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Why -
1)
Because winter is coming and people are without shelter. It's easy to give when
there is terrible devastation on our news screens. Harder to remember that the
devastating effects of loss of homes, fields, livelihoods, schools etc can last
for years and every penny of aid truly does count. See the following link
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/oxfam_in_action/emergencies/pakistan-floods2010.html?intcmp=hp_rhc_pak-floods-donate-box_170910
2)
Because educating girls can change the lives of whole communities in terms of
healthcare, hope and climbing out of poverty. I work with many girls whose
families have chosen to give them a good education. There are many more girls
in the world who do not have this opportunity. Do read the book 'Three cups of
tea' or visit their website to find out more. The links
are http://www.ikat.org/ and http://www.threecupsoftea.com/
There is
also a video called The Girl Effect you could watch if you want to find out
more http://www.girleffect.org/question
OK, so
that's a lot to follow up but it's a big world out there.
Please
generously sponsor me. This page is the Oxfam page and the link to sponsorship
for Central Asia Institute is www.firstgiving.com/jackiemcgillicuddy
The
official details come below. Please also talk to me in real life, not just this
virtual world to see how I'm doing.
With best
wishes
Jackie xx
