I’ve never imagined myself to be a runner (although I have
had many attempts at trying to be).  My most recent venture was a couch to 5k attempt last year where I managed to complete a 5k Park Run in under 38 minutes (one of my athletic highlights to date!).  So imagine my surprise when at my work’s 10 year anniversary bash I merrily rocked up to Hayley from the Disabilities Trust to offer my services as one of their runners for next year’s London Marathon.  Imagine my even greater surprise when I was actually chosen to run for one of their coveted 6 charity places (One small glass of prosecco has plenty to answer for!!).

So here I am – a mum to a 3 year old working as a Case Manager for Enable Therapy Services, an independent rehabilitation and vocational case management company based in Leeds: https://www.enabletherapyservices.co.uk/ supporting clients with complex care needs including brain injury following injury or illness.

However I think I have such a worthy cause to do it for.  All of my monies raised for this event will be going towards the Brain Injuries Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) and Daniel Yorath House – both worthwhile charities under the umbrella of the Disabilities Trust and are the chosen charities that Enable Therapy Services support via fundraising activities.  

The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) is the UK's leading charity in brain injury rehabilitation. They offer specialist assessment and rehabilitation services for people with disabilities resulting from brain injury. This includes traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke and other forms of acquired brain injury (ABI).  Founded in 1991, BIRT provides specialist assessment and rehabilitation at 15 centres across England, Scotland and Wales. The multi-disciplinary teams in their rehabilitation centres support people with a brain injury to function as independently as possible, develop their lives as they choose and participate in the wider community.  

Situated close to the city of Leeds, Daniel Yorath House is one of these specialist neurobehavioural rehabilitation centres for people with acquired brain injury. Opened in 1992, it was one of the first assessment and rehabilitation centres for brain injury in the UK. It forms part of the nationwide network of rehabilitation support services provided by the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT).  We are also keen to support Daniel Yorath House in particular which is local ETS in Leeds.

Over a million people in the UK are living with the effects of a long-term brain injury making services like BIRT and Daniel Yorath House essential in supporting people to improve their quality of life.
