Story

Why do you need to use a wine glass when drinking wine and not just any ordinary glass? You really don't need to drink wine in a wine glass unless if you want the wine to taste better. If this be the case then you should use a wine glass. It is believed that the shape of the glassware is important because it concentrates and makes the flavor and aroma of the wine more intense. The common belief is that the shape of the glassware directs the wine to the best area of the mouth.

There are 4 parts of a wine glass; the rim, the bowl, the stem, and the base. Most wine glass has stems; but the "stem less" wine glasses called wine tumblers are now getting popular. These wine tumblers are great for casual drinking and many more, which totally negate the benefits of using wine glasses that has stems. And one of those benefits is that when you are using a stemmed wine glass, your hand will only touch the stem and not the bowl. This can prevent your wine from getting warm. The common wine glasses can be divided into three different types: white wine glasses, red wine glasses, and champagne flutes. White wine glasses go on different sizes and shapes, from the very delicate champagne flutes to the wide and massive glasses used for Chardonnay. These different shaped glasses are used to emphasize the unique taste and aroma of different styles of wines. The function of the wide mouth of some of the wine glasses is to promote the rapid oxidation process which alters the aroma and flavors of the wine. Crystal red wine glasss are characterized by their wider, rounder bowl, which also increases the rate of the oxidation process. This oxidation process is considered to be more effective on red wines, whose complex flavors are said to be made smooth by exposing it to air. There are two styles of red wine glasses; the Bordeaux glass and Burgundy glass.

The Bordeaux glass is tall with a wider bowl, and is made for full bodied red wines like Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Burgundy glass, compared to the Bordeaux glass, is broader. It has a larger bowl to accumulate aromas from delicate wine like the Pinot noir. Champagne flutes are characterized by a tall, narrow bowl and long stem holding the bowl. The glass is designed that way so that it can keep the sparkling wine desirable during drinking. The bowl is designed to retain the champagne's signature spark and taste (carbonation) by reducing the surface area of the bowl. Although champagne flutes are commonly used on sparkling wine, they are also used in certain types of beers; beers like Belgian, Lambics, Gueuzes, and fruit beers. There are also other glasses like the sherry glass and the Boccalino. A sherry glass is used to serve aromatic alcoholic beverages like port, sherry, aperitifs, liqueurs, and layered shooters. There is a type of sherry glass called Copita. The copita has an aroma enhancing narrow taper. The Boccalino is like a mug used in Ticino, Switzerland; it is used to drink local wine.
