I have always been passionate about cycling, but it is only since the great success of the British Teams at the London 2012 Olympic Games that I have swapped my muddy mountain bike gear for lycra! I have taken part in a few long distance cycle races, but nothing quite as gruelling as this!
Two of my immediate relatives have recently need diagnosed with blood cancer and this has made be much more aware of the role that patient charities, such as Myeloma UK, play in making trustworthy, reliable information available to patients and their families to support their discussions and deductions with regards to treatments.
Myeloma is a cancer of the blood where too many abnormal plasma cells (a type of white blood cell) are made in the bone marrow. This means there is not enough room for normal red and white blood cells in the bone marrow, both of which plays an important part of the immune system, helping to fight infection and keeping you well.
Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma. They provide information and support to patients and their families, ands act as the patient's voice for access to new treatments and trials.
With the support of Myeloma UK great advances have been made in the last decade towards improved treatment for this complex disease.
I am very excited about this opportunity to raise funds for Myeloma UK to continue the fantastic work, which makes such a difference to patients.
