Some of you may be aware that Joe’s mum, Katrina, suffers with Gaucher’s disease: an inherited disorder affecting the metabolism and resulting in bone fragility, neurological disturbance, anaemia and fatigue.
When Katrina was diagnosed with this condition, in 1987, no treatment was available. It was likely that she would face a future of deteriorating mobility, major surgery and a significantly shortened lifespan.
Thanks to specialist research, an enzyme replacement therapy was discovered in the 1990s. Since then, Katrina has been able to receive fortnightly treatment at the Royal Berkshire Hospital which has helped lessen the effect of the symptoms, enabling her to live a happy and normal life.
With the above in mind at this poignant occasion, we would be grateful if those who would have looked to get us a gift could instead please make a donation to The Gauchers Association, to support the ongoing research into treatment for this little known condition.
