I will be running my first ever marathon this month, having been fortunate enough to get a place in the London Marathon. This is a great personal challenge for me but also an opportunity to raise money for something close to me too.

In 2013, I was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called myocarditis, a virus which attacks the heart and affects individuals of all ages, although most frequent in young males. After a stay on the cardiac high dependency unit at Southampton General Hospital, I luckily made a near full recovery, now only taking beta blockers to control my heart rate. However, others aren’t so lucky.

Alexander Jansons Fund was set up after the death of Alexander Janson from myocarditis when he was 18 years old. The fund has pledged a minimum of £80,000 per year to fund research and activities relating to myocarditis. This research will save lives in the future.  

 In 2018 Alexander Jansons Foundation merged with Cardiomyopathy UK and is now known as Alexander Jansons Fund. Money donated goes directly to a restricted fund specifically for the Alexander Jansons Fund within Cardiomyopathy UK . This means that donations can only be used for research and activities relating to myocarditis and not for any other purpose. This is a fantastic opportunity for the fund as they will now be able to offer an expert helpline nurse for people affected by myocarditis for as long as they need.  

Any donations are really welcomed, no matter how small! I would love to reach my target, as it would make a real difference to the research behind the condition and go a long way to helping people in the future.
