It is estimated that 12.7 million tonnes of plastic is being dumped in our oceans every year.
That’s a truck load of rubbish a minute.
The effects of this on the environment is huge. Many animals are choking to death from the plastic debris, while others are swallowing small pieces of plastic that will end up on our plates through contamination of the food chain.
As someone who has always lived close to the sea, I have noticed the growing amount of plastics that are being washed onto British shores. I want to raise awareness of this problem by completely cutting my consumption of meat and soft drinks throughout January; these industries have two of the highest plastic footprints. If we all took action to reduce our consumption of these products and to challenge corporations and Governments about their plastic policies, we can help to reduce the plastic pollution of our oceans.
