Story
My name's Kim, I live in Oakham, Rutland with my wonderful wife Laura and beautiful little boy Sebastian. A few months after moving to Rutland, in January this year, Laura was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer which had spread to her lungs and liver. The early days were not good and she was very ill initially but her determined spirit and weekly trips to the hospital to receive chemotherapy meant that after 26 weeks of treatment she had achieved a 'stable' diagnosis. A new 'normality' returned for a short time for us as a family.
Unfortunately Laura began to suffer headaches in the months following the end of chemotherapy. After an MRI scan we recently discussed the results with her oncologist and sadly the news wasn't good. The cancer has now spread to her brain and her prognosis has been severely diminished. The truth is we've been advised in terms of months rather than years.
I'm running this marathon in honour of my wife and my young son who's had a lot to deal with in a short time. It is also to raise some money to help those others facing similar situations. The Osborne Trust provides emotional and practical support for families with children aged 16 and under directed affected by cancer. The Trust gave us a much needed family day out earlier in the year, so now, as a family, we want to give something back.
