Staff from the LDC will be covering 1,000 miles. This will be: on foot around the hospital perimeter, via a bike ride, and using the static physical activity machines in the LDC gym such as the treadmill, rower, and cross-trainer. Diabetes has become a global epidemic. Around 4 million people in the UK alone have been diagnosed as having diabetes, and a staggering 422 million people worldwide affected. The Leicester Diabetes Centre has been dedicated to improving the lives of people with diabetes since 2005; and our mission is to be globally recognised as a Centre of Excellence, and through its world-leading multi-disciplinary research we want to transform the care and management of people who have diabetes. We believe that improving lives and reducing life threating, and often preventable, complications can be achieved through patient empowerment, healthcare professional training, research, and state-of-the-art treatment. Each year in Leicester around 1,000 people will be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes each year. It is this, that is our incentive to cover 1,000 miles as a symbolic representation for each one of the individuals and their families. Type 2 diabetes can be reduced through early and preventative intervention – let do it!
