This summer a small group of us from the University of Sussex will be attempting to climb Mount Kenya. Following the five-day climb, we’ll be supporting Team Kenya in the fantastic work that they do with local communities. This will be both a very different challenge and experience for me. I’ve been fortunate enough to have received a full and rewarding education, I’ve lived free of poverty and I’ve been brought up in a safe and loving environment. In many parts of Kenya, families cannot afford, or choose not, to send girls to school. Many drop out of primary school due to child marriage, pregnancy and household chores. School related gender based violence is widespread. Removing these barriers and creating success for girls in school is just one of many projects that Team Kenya are driving, in conjunction with the local community, to transform lives in rural areas.
