Please give whatever you can to this cause, then hopefully in time no one need suffer alone as Dad and those who loved him had to suffer.

My dad suffered from Vascular Dementia. My dad died recently. He had a fall which resulted in a broken hip. He was always blessed with robust good health. But after the trauma of the fall and the surgery that followed his Dementia escalated at an alarming rate. His dementia meant his care and treatment could not follow the usual structure of a busy Orthopaedic unit.  Despite this he remained an Orthopaedic patient. We soon discovered that there was very little support, advice, or help available to him or to us his family. He spent the last weeks of his life on a Orthopaedic ward. With no contact with specialist dementia trained staff.

This disease is disgustingly cruel and complex.  We would like to see in place structured support comparable with the Macmillan service, available to all suffering with End Stage Dementia, and their families.

We were told my dad was dying 5 weeks before his death in hospital, we first met with a palliative nurse 3 days before he died. Dementia is one of the fastest growing illnesses of our time, and most of us will be effected by it during our life. Change in general understanding, attitude, resources and support needs to happen now.
