Story

This year will be my seven year Cancerversary!
My 7th year living with cancer but who knows when it really began as for years I didn’t have any symptoms. When I was diagnosed my tumour had already spread to my liver and was incurable but other than my facial flushing and IBS symptoms it is an invisible disease.

There’s nothing like a cancer diagnosis to put you in the spotlight. While I’ve tried to be distracted, the diagnosis of cancer doesn’t go away. At times the medical interventions feel like a part time job, with regular CT scans, ultrasound scans, blood tests, injections, hospital appointments, the list goes on. My NET tumours are currently stable and regular monitoring and reviews are keeping me well and ensure I have a good quality of life. Since my diagnosis I’ve been grateful for the love and care of family, friends, Specialist nurses and Doctors.

After all the support I’ve received to reach this stage in my cancer journey I feel it’s time to acknowledge others too and be a voice for ‘the hidden cancer’. I want to promote awareness of Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs) in the hope that my story will reach others and help those starting out on their cancer journey.

I’m a firm believer of living in the moment, keeping active and listening to my body! I’m always up for a challenge and this year my husband Mark, and I have been training to conquer some long distance cycle routes.

We’ll be cycling the Devon Coast to Coast (160km) with friends in May,
The Northern Coast to Coast and Reivers Way (575km) in July.
With our training culminating by cycling with The Cyclopaths from Lands End to John O’Groats 1000 km in August.

All monies raised will go to the NET patient foundation for research of NET tumours and supporting patients with Neuroendocrine tumours.

Our purpose is to support and inform patients and families from diagnosis, enabling access to the best care and treatment, whilst stimulating Neuroendocrine Cancer research, increasing national awareness and influencing improvements in outcomes.

How the money you raise will help:
£5 - will provide one patient with a NET Handbook which covers all aspects of diagnosis, treatment and living with NETs.
£10 - will allow five patients to receive our NET Information Memory Stick which has videos specifically created for NET patients to help them learn more about their cancer.
£20 - will support a volunteers travel cost to hold a regional NET Natter support group.
£50 - will help us provide information and support resources at a patient centred event.
£250 - will allow an NPF Nurse to provide information and support through the advice line, NET Natter Groups and education events for two days.
£500 - will allow us to provide ten professional counselling sessions to anyone affected by a NET.
£1,000 - will support a patient education day to help patients increase their understanding of NETs and provide them with the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of doctors and nurses.
