Great Bristol 10k 2017 · 7 May 2017 ·

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young cancer patients aged 13-24. We fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them.

Story

The facilities at the Teenage and Young Adult unit (TYA )at Bristol Oncology Centre Cancer  were provided by  the Charity Teenage Cancer Trust.

I was shown around the amazing unit ,by the Lead Specialist Nurse Jamie Cargill, in 2014 ( he looked after Tom some 10 years earlier) when I joined the staff at Bristol Children's Hospital school team.

I certainly did not expect that we would be requiring their services as Tom was considered well into remission .Sadly in the Autumn of 2016 we found out that Tom's original tumour cells were back . So devastating and cruel.

Thankfully the team were there......

The inpatient ward and day unit looked after Tom .It was a place where I particularly gained support and strength knowing he felt comfortable safe and had privacy within a clinical environment . The staff look out for the whole family.

Tom battled hard but passed away on January 19 th this year. We were able to share so many good times due to his strength and genuine courage. He wanted us to support this charity and I entered the run before he died . He would not let me call it Tom's team so  Team "Jog on" was born!!

Now it is my time to give something back to this fantastic charity, to help others finding themselves in this hideous situation.

Cancer kills more young people than any other illness in the UK. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only charity dedicated to providing expert care and support from the moment they hear the word ‘cancer’. They treat them as young people first, cancer patients second and everything they do aims to improve their quality of life and chances of survival. At the moment, for every young person Teenage Cancer Trust help, there's another they can't. Help us reach more young people with cancer by donating towards my Great Bristol 10k challenge.
