We empower lives through football to make a real and lasting difference

Story

About the Challenge:

The challenge is to run from London to Paris in 7 days, the total distance will be around 180 miles and will involve running an average of a marathon each day.

The route will mainly follow the Avenue Verte, a green route that was created to link the two cities prior to the London Olympics back in 2012.

The planned route involves two 32-mile days from Tower Bridge in London to Newhaven, a ferry across to Dieppe, and then five more
consecutive days of running to reach the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

About Us:

Taking part in the challenge will be Mike Geary, CITC's Partnerships Manager; and Julie Seddon, Nutritionist & Former City Lifestyles Coach for CITC.

With Jules' background as a Nutritionist, CITC's aim of supporting local families and providing healthy meals for children is something that she is very passionate about.

The Christie Charity was a very personal choice following their fantastic support and the treatment they provided for Mike's Dad in recent years after he was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma.

Fundraising:

All of the funds raised by the challenge will be split equally between City in the Community Foundation and The Christie Charity.

Below you can read more about both charities and the work that they carry out.

City in the Community uses the power of football to tackle social issues, create opportunities and build futures, delivering award-winning inclusive programmes, focusing on health and education throughout
schools and communities in Manchester.

Impact:

  • Over 32,000 people engage with CITC programmes each year
  • Over 2,000 hours of free football delivered every year during school holidays and at peak times of anti-social behaviour
  • 1 in 3 participants reported increased confidence as a result of attending a CITC programme
  • 1 in 2 participants improved their mental well-being
  • Over 70% of participants developed and learnt a new skill

The funding received by CITC will go towards combating holiday hunger and providing free healthy meals for children attending our free soccer schools across Manchester during school holiday periods.

The Christie Charity

The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 44,000 patients a year. We have a history of over 100 years of leading cancer care and we serve a population of 3.2 million people across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, while 26% of our patients are referred to us from across the UK.

The charity helps deliver projects, equipment and improvements that are over and above what the NHS can fund, enabling our patients to have access to the best possible care, research and treatment possible.

The Christie charity raises funds for a range of vital projects and initiatives focusing on four main areas: research, care and treatment, education and extra patient services.

The funds raised from this challenge will be contributed towards the build of a brand new comprehensive Christie Cancer Centre in Macclesfield. The new centre will deliver radiotherapy, chemotherapy, clinical trials and holistic support closer to patient’s homes, to enhance their treatment and ensure the best possible outcomes.
