Back in January, I was captured by the great adventure and challenge of a cycle round Lake Malawi. I've been to Africa before but never to Malawi and never on two wheels! I'll be joining a group of 21 people on a 250 mile cycle in mid September to raise money for the fantastic charity that is 500 miles. Although I've been cycling back and forth to work over the last few years, I'm not sure the cycle paths to Dundee are the best preparation for the challenging terrain and sweltering heat of Malawi. So I've been putting in a few extra miles round the roads of Fife and in July I'm cycling with a small group from London to Paris over three days in the hope of convincing myself it can all be done - if only with the aid of copious amounts of French food and wine! 

It is, as Kenny Everett would almost have said, all in the best possible cause - 500 miles. 500 miles is a charity close to my heart as it was co-founded by Olivia Giles, another law graduate from Glasgow Uni, who also grew up in the village of Brookfield. The charity provides prosthetic and orthotic limbs for people in Malawi. It costs about £175 to produce each device which may seem a lot but will ensure that a person gets moving today and also that the making of the devices will continue for the benefit of future generations.
