We deliver long term mentoring in Somerset to help vulnerable children & young people

Story

Success!! A brutal mental and physical challenge and extraordinary adventure:

After climbing up thousands of metres over 5 days (climbing high and sleeping low) at 11pm on Sunday 6th October we set off for the summit. We climbed 1,500m to reach the top at 7am - 5,895m. This was followed by a 7 hour descent the same day to spend our last night on the mountain at 3,000m.

Our guide had insisted on the toughest route - Umbwe - and it certainly felt like it.

Your support, donations and messages have been massively appreciated and a huge driver in my quest to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, in aid of PROMISEworks. If you haven’t already....there is still time to donate!

My Kilimanjaro climb is a fundraising initiative for PROMISEworks, a charity for which I am a volunteer and mentor to a 6 year old boy. The climb is entirely self funded, so EVERY PENNY YOU DONATE WILL GO DIRECTLY TO PROMISEworks.

PROMISEworks is a Somerset based charity, which provides inspirational and intensive one-to-one mentoring for disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young adults who are on the edge of care or who have just left the care system. Most are formally recognised as Children in Need, and have been subject to one or all of abuse, neglect or exclusion.

The mentors in the PROMISEworks programme are unpaid volunteers who under-go intensive in-depth training, and commit to a minimum of 2 years with their young person. Positive benefits to mentees (and their families and local communities) come from increased resilience, growth in self-esteem, reduced self-harming, improved educational and work based outcomes and reduced offending behaviours.

The average cost per mentee of providing the mentoring service is budgeted at £2,000 a year. This compares with costs of £60,000 to £300,000 per year if the child enters the care system and up-to £150,000 per year if the child enters the criminal justice system.

There are approximately 70 mentors in the PROMISEworks programme currently, and the charity is looking to recruit another 70-80 mentors over the next 2 years. There are 500 young people in Somerset who have been identified as being in need of mentoring support. This initiative needs funding.

Huge thanks and gratitude for any donation you have been able to give in support of this important work.
