Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My Mum, Ivy Elsey was a Scout Leader, Primary School Teacher, Offsted Inspector, CQC Expert by Experience and Health Watch Volunteer. She knew her time was limited but remained fiercely independent and wanted to die at home. The hospice at home team supported her with advice and guidance over her last few months and she spent a week in the hospice to manage some of her symptoms. In her last weeks at home I was with her day and night, supported by the community nurses and care service. Over 40 years of nursing did not prepare me for this role, but the hospice Nurse Line was there for me 24 hours a day, advising, supporting and coordinating the services. I knew I was only a call away from support day or night. It enabled me to help Mum to be in control of her final journey, to die in her beloved home. We did this together for her and she died peacefully on 27th July 2018.

My challenge is to trek across the wilderness of the Sahara for 4 days and 4 nights, across terrain of sun dried plains, dried up rivers beds wide sandy dunes fields and hard rocky outcrops for 15-20 kms a day. The temperatures will be scorching in the day and zero at night!

I want to do this challenge, in the year I am 60, in memory of Mum and to help support the hospice to provide their services and especially the Nurse Line in the future.

I have paid the total cost of my adventure, so every penny donated will go straight to the hospice for their wonderful work. Thank you for reading my story.
