Story

* UPDATE * Sadly my Nan passed away on the 9th June 2017.

My Nan got diagnosed with Dementia just aged 70 after showing signs from the age of 66. She's now 80 and living under the care of my 86 year old grandad, who isn't in the best health himself, and a team of carers, who do everything for her. My Nan is now unable to eat, communicate and care for herself in anyway and lives in a a specialised bed in the living room. Throughout the years her ability to speak and use facial expressions has declined and now she is unable to communicate at all. This is heartbreaking for all family members as we know she is still in there somewhere. Getting a smile from my nan is precious, it gives us comfort that she is acknowledging us, even though she does not remember us anymore.

She is my inspiration and I want to do all I can to prevent this from happening to other families. I would not wish this on anyone. I'm taking part in the Memory Walk with my mum, who spends hours every week ensuring my nan and grandad are okay and have everything they need, putting them before herself. As well as the memory walk, I will be fundraising in other ways throughout the year.  Please help us in raising awareness and money for Dementia so we can help stop Dementia and find a cure to stop this happening to anyone else.

Around 225,000 people develop dementia every year – that’s the equivalent to one person every three minutes. This September and October Memory Walks will be taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise money for a world without dementia. Arm in arm, step by step and pound by pound, we will get there. Once you donate, Just Giving will send your money directly to the Alzheimer's Society. So it’s the most efficient way to raise money – saving time and cutting costs for the charity. Please dig deep and help us walk for a world without dementia.
