Story

A HUGE THANK YOU to all who took part and thosed who sponsored them. You have helped us to raise a fantastic £6,000. Every penny of this will be used to better the lives of people in Wales living with lung conditions.

"NEWSFLASH"  my crazy hubby, Doug, is doing it again - for the 4th time. At 66 he must be mad, but he says "It's all for a good cause!"

Hi, once again Breathe Easy Neath Valley is running its annual fundraising abseil event. This is the fourth year, and over the last three years we have raised £16,500 – FANTASTIC ! How much can we add to that total this year ?

All sorts of people come along on the day – some to do and some to watch and cheer. Last year Ruth Madoc came along to support us. The first picture is of me with Ruth and the second is my husband Doug, half way down the rock. He abseiled for the first time three years ago, and has been up for it ever since – calls himself a rock star now. Can you see the tubes in my nose ? They are to deliver oxygen which I need every day to help my lungs which are damaged by COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Did you know that one in five people in Wales have COPD ? Many are in early stages and are as yet undiagnosed. British Lung Foundation Wales is running a programme of Lung Function testing, in shopping centres and other locations around Wales, to find these people and get them help now. They have also lobbied for better pulmonary services in some areas, have direct contact with the Welsh Assembly, and they have set up Breathe Easy Groups like ours all across Wales. Last year we bought our local respiratory team a spirometer and some other pieces of equipment, at a cost of £3,000. Spirometry is the way COPD is diagnosed and so these machines are vital.

The event is run for us every year by Call of the Wild, a lovely company who don’t charge us to help with our fundraising, so every penny you give goes to help people living with lung conditions. So, now you know who we help and why, and how your money will be spent, please dig deep and help a worthy cause.
