Story

I was brought up in Llan Ffestiniog which is in South Snowdonia. Mum was a volunteer in the Mountain Rescue when I was a child, and I remember the abandoned Sunday lunches as she would be called out. She went without hesitation or complaint. In my eyes she is totally inspirational.

Now others volunteer to do this difficult job, helping people in difficulty, whatever the time of day or weather.

I now live in Brighton and am an active member of the Brighton School of Samba. 14 of us from the School decided to climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), at night on the Summer Solstice 2019 and watch the sunrise from the top. We joked that we might need rescuing, and this got me thinking.... why not do it for the local Search and Rescue charity.

Don't worry, we shouldn't need rescuing as a competent and experienced guide has been hired to see us safely on our way.

We will leave Llanberis at 1am on the 21st June, in the dark with headtorches and a sense of adventure. Uphill until will reach the top by 5am in time to  experience the solstice sunrise from the highest point in Wales and England. We can congratulate ourselves with a quick little samba at the top, before heading back down for breakfast.

Here is what the North Wales Mountain Rescue Assoc say:

"Able to provide a range of rescue activities including searching for people in mountainous and inhospitable terrain, rescue from swift and flood waters and searching for vulnerable people missing from home (oh and the occasional animal rescue), the association brings together a number of different independent teams from across the region. All of its members are unpaid volunteers, willing to turn out in all weathers at any time of day to help those in need"
