There are so many refugees coming to Athens every day. When they arrive in Athens, they receive very little help from the government. Many already have health issues when they arrive. Living as a refugee in crowded conditions with poor nutrition only adds to their medical needs. It is very hard for a refugee without legal status to access the medical help they need when they cannot speak the language, and they lack the money necessary to pay for the care. They are left to themselves, struggling to find a place to stay and to feed their family, overwhelmed. Finding any form of income for a refugee without legal status is next to impossible.Their lives have very little stability.

For the last 3 years we have been organizing regular Medical Days for refugees mostly from Afghanistan, Iran and Syria. We are working with local doctors who graciously give their time and have a heart to help. We provide translators and fund prescribed medications and follow up testing.

On one occasion we met a family from Afghanistan with a little baby girl. She was not growing well and looked very sick. The parents brought her for a little cold, but the pediatrician discovered a problem with her heart.With her help, we found a cardiologist surgeon who saw her the next day. It became clear the baby needed surgery urgently.With help from several doctors she got admitted and her surgery was a success. This girl survived and we learned that several babies from this family had not made it past one year. They all had the same heart condition.This was all possible because doctors were willing to donate their medical services and others provided money to cover medications and testing.

We have the opportunity to provide a clinic for refugees for the entire first week of October 2015 (not just one day). We already have doctors who would come and help us but we need resources to provide for medicines, bloodwork and other medical tests if necessary.
