For the third year running I organised a Cross Morecambe Bay walk to help raise funds for this fantastic charity which works in East Africa training clinical officers how to safely relieve dental pain and suffering. Since 2004 over 4 million Tanzanians now have access to safe extractions as a result of the volunteer programmes run in remote rural locations. Teams of Uk dentists and nurses spend two weeks working with clinical health care workers teaching them the necessary skills to administer anaesthetics and remove teeth ravaged by decay and gum disease. Once the clinical officers have received the training they then receive equipment including forceps and a pressure cooker (for sterilisation of instruments)to allow them to return to their rural clinics where they may have up to 10,000 people to look after. Dental nurses are vital to this programme helping train the officers in safe decontamination techniques and in oral health education. 

I joined a B2A programme in October 2014 and took two dental nurses with me. I am hoping to return to Tanzania next year but would like to raise funds to contribute to the costs for a dental nurse to join a programme later this year.

The walk was led by Cedric Robinson and we joined three other charities so over 900 people were safely guided across this amazing stretch of coastline. Many many thanks for those that joined in - including walk registration and donations on the day over £1400 has been raised so far.

I am planning. Fourth and final crossbay next year and hope to encourage more of my dental colleagues and friends to fly the balloons for B2A! I won't know the date until later in the year when Cedric works out the tide timetable! Visit my website for more information or email me:
