We support those affected by lymphoedema to live the best lives possible

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The Hard Rocking Hikers are Mike, his wife Lorna and their 7 year old son Irvine Wilson, Robert Logan and Mark Boyd. Walking in aid of Lymphoedema Support Network,  a charity endorsed by my brother Andy Wilson, who due to the condition has had to pull out of the hike himself. Although not climbing herself, Lorna is providing invaluable support, helping with fund-raising, planning and catering (thanks babe).

Lymphoedema is thought to affect more than 200,000 people in the UK. Primary lymphoedema is rare and is thought to affect around 1 in every 6,000 people. Secondary lymphoedema is much more common. Secondary lymphoedema affects around 2 in 10 women with breast cancer, and 5 in 10 women with vulval cancer.

At 13 years old a simple sprained ankle caused swelling in my brother Andy's right leg. This unresolved swelling lead to him being diagnosed with primary lymphoedema.

Since then he has had swelling to his legs needing treatment by compression bandages. A small cut to his legs or feet results in cellulitis and in some instances septicaemia,  he has spent weeks in hospital due to these infections.

Yet he is determined to carry on living life to the full. He was due to undertake this hike with us but recent tests have shown that he has lost further lymph nodes further reducing his immune system leaving him increasingly susceptible to infection and has been advised not to do the walk by his consultant. So 7 year Irvine (my son) has stepped up to fill his spot.

This disease affects male and female, young and old and can lead to loss of mobility.

Please give generously to help this deserving charity.
