Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.  I really hope you you can support me by making the biggest donation possible to help me reach my new target for this very worthy cause.

Last year I cycled 700 kilometres, all the way from Leeds to Paris, over five days in May to raise as much money as possible for Brain Tumour Research and Support (BTRS). This year I am picking up from where I finished and cycling from Paris to Geneva. It is a little bit shorter, at 580 kilometres, but includes a 1393 metre climb over the Col de Faucille on the final day.

It is another great challenge for the same worthy cause. The effort that I have put into my training throughout the year is nothing compared to the tireless work of this fantastic charity.

I'm supporting BTRS because the facts about brain tumours make alarming reading:

  • Survival rates are no better than they were 40 years ago, yet research into the cause(s) of brain tumours and potential methods of treatment remain under-funded.
  • They are the most common cause of death in children.
  • Due to their location, at the centre for thought, emotion and physical function, brain tumours are difficult to treat. The cure rate is lower than most other types of cancer.
  • There are over 120 different types of brain tumour and they currently can't be prevented as their cause is not known.

You can find out much more about these alarming facts and the fantastic work being undertaken by BTRS at www.btrs.org.uk.

This cause has a personal and poignant significance for me and my family. Many of you will know that we lost my Dad to a rare primary brain tumour when he was just 59. Like so many others, he went from being an otherwise healthy person with so much of life still to enjoy to being struck down with a totally debilitating, inoperable brain tumour that ended his life in a matter of just seven weeks.

Like many other families we live with the loss every day, but life must go on and, with your help, we might just prevent others from having to face the same tragedy.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this page. I do hope you can sponsor me as I tackle the next leg of my own particular journey. Knowing that I am raising essential funds for BTRS will make those pedals turn just that little bit easier!!
