Story

Hi, my name's Moishi Netzer.

About 3 years ago, one of my close friends, Avi Dubiner started the Shabbos Walk. Being one of the first walkers of the organization we naturally did the longest walks. Whether it was Finchley Memorial, Barnet or Great Ormond Street we would walk there.

At first, I asked myself "Why am I walking 3 hours just to visit people who aren't well" but I realized very quickly that what I was doing was something a lot bigger than just walking.

I still remember one of my favorite people to visit, Harold. He was a lovely old man who was in a mental care home. Each week he would wait by the door on shabbos for us to come. When we came he would get extremely excited and smile from ear to ear. Every time we grew closer and closer. Each week not only was he waiting for me to come, I would wait until I could walk and visit him.

After creating real relationships with these people, I would see that if we wouldn't have been there, they would have noone to keep them busy, shmooz with them, ask them how their week was. When we went to visit certain patients, I knew that because I was there, they didn't feel the need to turn on the television or break Shabbos.

To me, my family means the world to me, and it hurts me to know that there are people out there, who have noone by their side (Especially when they need it the most). They are waiting for shabbos to end, wanting it to be over, when all it takes is a few small words to make their week, to keep them from being bored. Someone to give them just a bit of love.

I have helped out in many organizations and charities. Whether it was Ezra, GIFT packing or Chaveirim. Out of all of these, none are as close to my heart than the Shabbos Walk. Seeing it grow from just our class; about 10 guys, to now over 300 people has been heartwarming.

Each week, after walking long distances, the Shabbos Walk sends cabs out to fetch the volunteers so that they don't need to make a second 3 hour walk. In order to do this, you can imagine the costs are huge.

So when I was approached to raise money, I agreed instantly. On Friday 15th March I will be taking part in the Jerusalem Marathon 2019 to run 21km for the Shabbos Walk. Given I'm not the physically fittest bird in the jungle, this is going to be a real challenge for me and I hope to raise as much as possible!

For anyone who donates £100 or over, I'll put a picture or phrase on my running shirt of whatever they want.

Thank you so much for your donations, I appreciate any amount you donate. Thanks SO MUCH!!!!!!!
