Story

Asylum seekers and refugees from across London have come together with professional singers and musicians  to sing BILL WITHERS' LEAN ON ME, a song of solidarity.

Watch the video here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al24pNejAbk&feature=youtu.be

This song is an opportunity for the voices of asylum seekers to be heard, to raise awareness of the challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees and to raise funds to support them.

All funds raised on this page will go to the NNLS Destitute Asylum Seekers Drop In (Registered Charity No: 1094668). This project
provides a large package of support to hundreds of asylum seekers across London and beyond. This support includes food, clothing, consultations with doctors,
lawyers and therapists, supermarket vouchers and travel money. The project is run entirely by volunteers and all funds raised by this song will be used to purchase the vouchers and travel money for the asylum seekers.

Tamara McFarlane, one of the singers in the choir wrote this poem/rap about her experience as an asylum seeker:

We Shall Overcome one day
Asylum seeker is the name
Society wants to make it a shame
Fleeing for your life is not a game
For this we should not be blame

We will overcome someday
Being in a foreign land without rights
No one to care for my perilous plights
So for my life I keep up the fight
Hoping that freedom is well in sight

We going overcome some day
Asylum seeker is not my life story
Choosing life got me on this journey
Most times alone, no friend no family
Corrupt system, silently suffering & bigotry

We will overcome soon one day
I'm a refugee don't mean I'm cursed
Take a minute get to know me first
Asylum seeker, a refugee is just like you
We shall overcome one day for sure tis true
