The Coronavirus pandemic has meant that the future for disabled people is even more challenging. We want to ensure we can continue to help provide new products and a range of services that bring greater independence.

Story

Many of you will have seen Adnan wizzing about in little car (aka his Wizzybug!) over the last 3 months. Although he has had his Wizzy since he was two, since Lockdown began and Adnan has been at home he has been riding it almost every single day, and most days at least 2/3 times a day. It has given him the ability to move independently, something he would not have been able to do otherwise. His confidence has grown, and he has gone from only being able to reverse to fully manoeuvring himself around the garden! Adnan relies on us for everything, so for him to be able to move independently in his Wizzy has been truly amazing to see. It has also provided hours of entertainment over the lockdown period and we often can't get him out of it!

Designability are the charity who provide these electric wheelchairs to children below the age of 5. They provide these on a free loan scheme to families across the UK and they need our help to continue providing services like this. The Triple8 Challenge represents the distance between the two furthest away Wizzybugs (888 miles). We are taking part in the Triple8 Challenge to help them continue to create and provide products and services to disabled people across the UK.

We want to give back to the charity that has given Adnan so much. So we have set ourselves the challenge of riding/running/walking 888 kilometres over the next 8 weeks:

  • Adnan will ride 8km on his Wizzybug over the next 8 weeks
  • Ali and Zainab will run 8km a week for the next 8 weeks
  • Great Grandma Najefi (aka Mama) will do 8 laps a week of the garden for the next 8 weeks (equal to  roughly 6.4km)
  • Dadi and Dada Najefi and Nani and Nana Nurbhai will walk 8km a week for the next 8 weeks
  • Nisreen Faiji and Husayn Fuaji will run/walk/cycle 8km a week
  • Khadija Faiji will run/walk/cycle 8km a week
  • Yusuf Mama and Douriya Mami will run 8km a week
  • Farida Masi and Huzaifa Masa will run 8km a week
  • The rest of the Najefi and Nurbhai clans - Amena, Burhanuddin, Safiya, Musa and Sakina - will be our cheerleaders and help us make up the rest of the 34km to get us to 888km!

If you would like to join us, let us know!! The more the merrier!

These wheelchairs help to enable children gain greater independence and choice in every day life. Designability receives no statutory funding and the majority of the funds they need come from voluntary donations. If you want to find out more about their work, visit www.designability.org.uk. Any donation no matter how big or small will make a huge difference.
