In July I'm heading to South Africa to work with young people in village to enhance their livelihoods, educate about sexual and reproductive rights and build on sustainability projects. 

The charity I'm going with is Restless Development - they believe it's young people that really have the power to make a difference in the world. This is part of the International Citizen Service (ICS), funded by the Department of International Development.

In South Africa, young people make up 42% of the population. 36.5% of 22-30 year old's aren't equipped with the skills that enable them to enter employment to support a sustainable livelihood. We'll be holding CV workshops and aiming to build confidence in the youth of the community.

There are higher rates of HIV in women, at 21% than men, 5.1%. We'll be working to educate the local community about sexual health and working directly to advocate about teenage pregnancies and HIV.

I know by going to South Africa for 3 months I'm not going to change the world in the blink of an eye - I'm not that naive anymore. But one part of me still truly holds on to the idea these smaller steps build the foundations for contributing to a much bigger picture. Making someone's day. Helping someone make a living. Educating someone about their rights.
