Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Mesothelioma is a form of lung cancer that affects an increasing number of people. Builders, teachers, doctors, nurses, firemen, police, just about everyone is at risk as a result of exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos takes many forms and was used in homes and factories as an insulation. Unfortunately, it's full of microscopic fibres that can get into the lungs. Once there, it lies in wait, sometimes for up to 40 years before it begins to affect the lining of the lungs. When it happens it's usually quick to kill.

At present there is no cure for this. But apathy seems to be the biggest problem. Because it can take so long to act we ignore the fact that we might have been exposed. The truth is that it can also strike fast.

Experts believe that the peak in cases will be in about ten years time. Asbestos is no longer being used but it's still out there. It's in walls, ceilings, floors, on pipes, in some artex coatings, in tiles, on roofs...just about everywhere. Just because it's no longer used doesn't mean we can forget about it. It's still with us and we can't be complacent. Never go near it without disposable coveralls. Always wear breathing apparatus and dispose of everything, including footwear in a bag that can be sealed and taken to a licenced tip. Some cases have been caused by washing the contaminated clothes. Beware. Don't take chances.

Please help me to raise funds for research and treatment of this killer. I hope it'll never affect you directly but the chances are that we'll all be affected in someway soon.
