Right guys, here's the deal:
I'm running the Brighton Marathon 2014 dressed as Lady Rainicorn* to support Stonewall and the amazing work they have done for my community; the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Why Lady Rainicorn?
Because rainbows and unicorns are usually associated with the queer culture…and because I hope that, by doing something a little unconventional, I will capture people’s attention and encourage them to support a cause I so deeply believe in.
Some folk have asked me why LGBT people need charities and donations, so here are just a few of the shocking statistics that explain why:
Homelessness – UK studies indicate that as many as 30%** of young homeless people in urban areas are LGBT. They have often been forced to leave home or have fled to escape homophobic bullying.
Homophobic Bullying – A staggering 65%** of young LGBT people have experienced homophobic bullying along with a massive ¾ of LGBT students in faith schools.
That's without even mentioning specific issues the LGBT community is facing including discrimination, depression, HIV and suicide.
I'll wear my Lady Rainicorn costume throughout my journey; during my training sessions, on the train ride from London to Brighton and as I run my first ever marathon.
My target is the year I was born: 1982. You know, because I was BORN THIS WAY! :)
Would you like to see me running the Brighton Marathon 2014 in my Lady Rainicorn costume?
Then please donate now!
P.S. Keep an eye out for me wearing my Lady Rainicorn costume as I train all over London, and in case you miss me, you can check back here for regular picture updates!
JustGiving sends your donation straight to Stonewall so it’s a quick and safe way to donate.
*Lady Rainicorn Lady Rainicorn is a long unicorn-like creature whose body shares the same colours as a rainbow. She has a blonde mane, big round eyes and a single white, sharply pointed horn. My costume is not ready yet, but it will be soon, and you'll see my pictures here!
