Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I feel so lucky to have been given a Golden Bond place to run in the 2018 London Marathon by the team at Alzheimers Research.

My Dad has suffered with Dementia for over 10 years now and has been in a care home for the last two years. It has been heartbreaking to witness him gradually deteriorate over time, to watch his personality and sense of humour slowly disappear. From the early years when he was fully aware that his condition was getting worse and seeing his bravery facing up to what his future would become, to now where he is fully cared for but does no longer recognize family and friends and cannot talk or communicate.

Therefore it is a great privilege to be able to raise funds to try and combat this terrible disease and any donation, large or small would be very much appreciated.

Dad ran the London Marathon three years in a row in the mid eighties with times between three and a half and four hours, no pressure there then...........

•    Over 850,000 people live with Dementia in the UK and that number is rapidly rising
•    At £24 billion each year, dementia costs the UK economy more than cancer and heart disease combined but over two thirds of the care for Dementia patients is paid for by themselves or their family.
•    £20 pays for 1 hour of pioneering dementia research.
•    £100 could provide the tools for scientists to map 10,000 genes in minute detail, identifying targets for the development of new treatments.
•    £500 will cover the cost of a sensitive brain scan for a patient involved in a research study, tracking the effectiveness of new drug treatments, improving diagnosis and better understanding how diseases like Alzheimer’s wreak their havoc in the brain
•    £1000 will pay for reagents, unique chemicals that are crucial for successfully growing cells in a laboratory ready for disease study
•    £2500 will allow researchers to buy synthetically made amyloid, to better understand this hallmark Alzheimer’s protein in the lab
