Story

Conservation International seeks to break the cycle of destruction of Africa's natural capital along with the well-being of those people who still depend on it. This new development model embraces economic growth while valuing nature and protecting or managing it for the benefit of human well being.

CI works with local Partners in Northern Kenya, most notably The Northern Rangelands Trust, which is a community led coalition of local leaders, politicians and conservation interests. The NRT aims to develop resilient community conservancies which transform people's lives, secure peace and conserve natural resources. Collectively these projects want to empower societies to responsibly and sustainability care for nature for the well being of all of us.

I am very much looking forward to this intimate and unforgettable experience of Africa as well as the opportunity to better understand the community conservation model which has been used so successfully in East Africa in recent years. This is an opportunity to explore a legendary landscape, with a small group of amazing women while also supporting Conservation International's approach of community-driven management of shared natural resources for the benefit of both local people and nature. We will learn about the daily challenges of those who live most closely to nature and depend everyday on the food and water provided from the land in this harsh but extraordinary environment.

I will be travelling with strong women from diverse backgrounds and meeting many who have committed their lives to preserving this incredible landscape and the people and animals that continue to share it.

About the charity

We know that human beings are totally dependent on nature — and that by saving nature, we’re saving ourselves. To that end, CI is helping to build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet. We do this through science, policy, and partnerships with countries, communities and companies. Over the years, CI has helped support 1,200 protected areas and interventions across 77 countries, safeguarding more than 601 million hectares of land, marine and coastal areas. Our work is moving entire societies toward a healthier, more sustainable development path — so that we don’t use up today what we’re going to need tomorrow. At CI, we don’t focus on one sector or one issue. And we’re not interested in short-term fixes. Instead, building upon a foundation of science, partnership and field work, we find global solutions to global problems. We measure success in human terms. Our ultimate goal is to protect the most fundamental things that nature provides to all of us: our food, our fresh water, our livelihoods and a stable climate. Nature doesn’t need people - people need nature.
