Both our children were born at St.Georges, but it wasn't until our youngest, Oscar, was born that we truly appreciated all the hard work and care that the various departments and staff at St Georges provide.

It was at our 7 day post birth follow up, that our nurse highlighted Oscar's jaundice might be of concern. Our eldest suffered mild jaundice, like most babies, but it disappeared by day 10.  However Oscar seemed unable to flush it out and he was looking more and more tango'd by the day.

The nurse rang up the Paediatric A&E and we were told to pop down so they could check him over and do some tests - that was the start of the most worrying 72hrs of our lives as parents.  What was just meant to be a routine checkup, was turning into a parent's worst nightmare.

Within 30 minutes of arriving in A&E, Oscar was in his own room and connected up to several machines/monitors and placed under several UV lights  (pictured above)

When the first set of results came back, Oscar's bilirubin level was at 408mol/L - we had no idea what that meant, but the doctor kindly showed us a graph which highlighted the different treatment levels. Anything over 400 was classed as requiring a blood transfusion, so understandably our hearts sank as it appeared this was now serious. 

However, the doctors were happy to wait a couple of hours to see if the light therapy and drip were doing their job, as were we.  With great relief, Oscar's bilirubin levels slowly started to reduce and he was responding to the light therapy.  It took another 72 hours before he was well enough to be released and go home, but we truly believe it was due to the post natal nurse's initial concerns and the paediatric A&E staff of St.Georges that Oscar is now a happy and naughty toddler.

Since then, we have had numerous trips & overnight stays in the Paediatric A&E at St.Georges over the last 3 years, which is why all money we raise will be donated to that department and in turn help other families like ours in the future through great staff, training and facilities.
