About Phil and his 5000 mile charity challenge
Phil Swanston lives and works in Old Oxted, Surrey, where he is well known as the downstairs bar manager in the popular Crown Inn.
Phil cycled 5,083 miles around the entire coastline of mainland Britain from the 5th of June 2010 Phil until the 18th of September 2010.
Phil did this in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. As the Alzheimer's Society only covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and a largish chunk of Phil's ride is around Scotland, Phil has contacted Alzheimer Scotland and has agreed to donate to this charity also.
Phil’s mother, Odette, was diagnosed with this cruel disease over six years ago . It came as a big shock to Phil and his brother Colin, when she passed away on the 1st of July this year. Phil was in Cheshire - 1400 miles into his trip when he learned first hand the impact that this dreadful disease has on families.
After the funeral, Phil continued his cycle ride with even more vigour, averagingin 68 miles per day for three months, solo and unsupported.
The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with dementia. The money raised will go towards the Society’s stated aims of giving support to sufferers and their carer’s and the search for a cure.
Phil hopes to raise in excess of £20,000 over the course of his journey. He is looking for sponsorship help from both individuals businesses.
