I am running this race to help raise money for Alpha-1. This is a charity that a colleague of mine, Alan, holds close to his heart. After reading his story I thought it would be a great cause to support.
A note from Alan:
At the age of 5 weeks old my son was diagnosed as having
Alpha-1 (‘Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency’), a condition that my wife Emma and I had never heard of. It is a liver and lung condition that has no cure and it means that he will need a liver and probably lung transplant later on. We don’t know at what age either, he may be 50, he may be just 11. We will only know when his organs have degrade too much, he can’t go on a transplant list till they have degraded, and there is no guarantee that there will be any available when he needs them. Alphas also usually get COPD and/or emphysema even if they
have never smoked. In the end there is a high chance he will live with an air tank permanently with him, a tube hooked up to his nose, giving him the vital oxygen he needs.
About Alpha-1 Awareness UK
Alpha-1 is a charity formed to provide information and support to sufferers of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. They maintain close links with experts and organisations associated with the condition, including European Alpha groups, pharmaceuticals and clinicians. Our primary objective is to improve the understanding of A1AT in both patients and medical professionals, as well as to provide support for Alphas and their carers.
