Story

Hi - welcome to our JustGiving page...

On the 19th of August Matt Dobbie, Kev Newton and Bob Wright will be setting off on a Ramshackle Rally to Valencia.

We'll be travelling over 1800 miles, unsupported in a 15 year old Mercedes which has definitely seen better days. We're driving from Leeds to the rally starting point in Calais where we'll join 80 other teams, each in their own cars before setting off in convoy. We'll be passing through Annecy, Sanremo and Perpignan before ultimately ending in Valencia.

Most teams decorate their cars and we've spent weeks decorating our car in a musical theme, complete with a giant guitar on the roof, drum kit on the boot and keyboards down the sides. To top it all off there's a live speaker cab on the bonnet which will be rigged through a small amp to an electric guitar on the back seat!

We're collecting sponsorship money for a charity called Music for Africa. The charity raises money to build and maintain classrooms, employ music tutors and provide instruments for kids who would otherwise never get the opportunity to play and express themselves in a way that we take for granted.

In the early 1950's, a little boy born in Witbank, South Africa was given his first trumpet by an anti-Apartheid chaplain, Trevor Huddlestone. For obvious reasons, no music schools at that time were open for the boy's development, but he pursued music abroad and, nowadays, you know him as Hugh Masekela...however clichéd it may be, music opportunities can and do transform lives.
