Rod has multiple myeloma which is cancer of the bone marrow. He had a stem cell transplant in March 2014 and was on the Myeloma XI clinical drugs trial. Unfortunately he has relapsed a couple of times as he has an aggressive form of the disease which has broken through all of the treatments. This is a rare cancer, often misdiagnosed. 1 in 5 people dies of this cancer within 60 days of diagnosis. Myeloma UK uniquely funds research into this condition and supports patients and their families.
Myeloma is a horrible disease. As the bone marrow is where our blood is made, it means that the cancer overwhelms the blood so that the bits of our blood we need to function are destroyed by the proliferation of the myeloma cells. That means that platelets become low so you bleed like a haemophiliac; your white blood cells become low so that you have no immunity and haemoglobin (which carries oxygen around your body) gets low which means you struggle to breathe and get very weary. Myeloma also attacks the bones from the inside. Bones break and become full of holes like Swiss cheese and calcium leaks into your body affecting your cognitive function. At the end stage, myeloma can then leak out of your bones and block your vital organs. There is no cure for myeloma and Myeloma UK receives no government funding. It is the only organisation raising money to search for a cure.
We're raising money for Myeloma UK through organising various events with the help and support of our amazing friends and family.
Rod and I would appreciate any donation for Myeloma UK.
Many Thanks
Rod and Susan
