Story

Hello I’m Ros, I live in rural Queensland with my husband Kerry and we have three amazing grown-up children.

In 2015 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was a challenging time, however with good medical care and the love and support of my wonderful family and friends I got through the gruelling treatment of a mastectomy, an axilliary clearance, chemotherapy, radiation and hormone treatment.

A life-threatening diagnosis like this takes a physical & mental toll on a person, however research had suggested exercise reduces the risk of a recurrence. So, a week after treatment finished—and having never run before—I started. First the Couch to 5k (C25K) programme, then I joined a running group, and after realising the enjoyment in sharing the running experience, with friends, I started the Wondai parkrun and the Wondai Country Running Festival. In 2017 I finished my first half marathon and since then, have completed several more with a great group of running friends. Running became and continues to be a part of my life.

2020 was five years since my diagnosis, and to commemorate reaching this  milestone I aimed to combine two things that helped me through that tough time -family and running. So my son Pete and I committed to running the London Marathon and to raise funds for cancer research to assist others experiencing what I did, and to increase survival rates. Our hope is that one day we will beat all cancers.

Whilst Covid put the kibosh on the 2020 and 2021 London Marathon dream we have places in the 2022 marathon. Hurrah ! so are looking forward to finally getting there.

We are partnering with Worldwide Cancer Research (WCR)  who have been funding ground-breaking research around the world for forty (40) years.  We are fundraising for them because they are making a difference in the fight against cancer. Their philosophy is: “If we believe a project can make a difference in the fight against cancer then we will award a grant to make it happen. We’re not interested in national borders or any kind of geographical bias, just the most promising proposals. And that’s the very reason we ask the brightest and best scientists from around the world to bring their research projects to us."

WCR website is: www.worldwidecancerresearch.org/

If you can spare a few dollars or pounds please consider supporting Pete and I in our quest to support WCR and complete this iconic marathon.
