South Downs Half Marathon · 18 June 2016

Far too many of us have felt the pain of losing someone we love. With your donations, we power groundbreaking cardiovascular research to save and improve lives, bring hope to families, and keep hearts beating across the UK.

Story

On 18th June, 2016 I will be attempting the South Downs Half Marathon. This is no normal half marathon though. If you know the area at all, you will be aware that it is incredibly hilly. As if 13.1 miles isn't bad enough. Doing 13.1 miles over hills will be tough.

What will make this even tougher, for me personally, is running with 2 diagnosed heart problems.

The first is 'Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia'. This is a heart defect I was born with and affects the blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle. Upon arrival to this world, the doctor told my Mum that I would not be able to run more than 10 metres without getting out of breath. Well, here I am 26 years later, running a lot further than 10 metres (try 20,000 metres).

The second heart problem is 'Supra-Ventricular Tachycardia', but more commonly known as SVT. This is a defect that usually has a trigger, that then sends your heart rhythm out of sync. I'm sure you would have heard my story from the end of first year at University - where I drank to many caffeine drinks. Ended up in hospital with a heart rate of over 230bpm (resting should be about 70-80). So they had to basically re-set my heart rate.

So, I'm running this half marathon to raise money for the one charity that has funded the monitoring of my heart throughout my life. It may be a selfish reason that I'm choosing the British Heart Foundation. But, they do so much wonderful work in the aid of detecting, monitoring and rehabilitating heart defects. 'Cus we all know the most important part of the human body is the heart.

So, please donate as much as you can. It doesn't matter how big or how small the donation. Every penny will count and every penny will be greatly appreciated.
