If you or anyone you know is a survivor of domestic or sexual violence or hate crime, you will know how  difficult it is for victims to come forward. For disabled victims, the barriers are so difficult to overcome that many do not speak out. When they do, they face  inaccessible services, institutional barriers discrimination, losing their children - or just more abuse they were not believed, so the abuser grows in power. Stay Safe East is still the only organisation run by disabled people for disabled people who have experienced domestic and sexual violence, crime or other forms of abuse.  It provides advocacy and practical and emotional support to survivors in East London. Behind these dry words are staff and volunteers who are there for survivors:  "you hold us along the journey"  - from listening to the person's story (often this the first time they have been properly heard), help them get safe, to being there with them if they choose to report to the police. Victims get help with practical issues, from housing to getting a care package or mental health support or membership of Dial-a-Ride so the disabled person can at last get out and about. Stay Safe East also helps disabled women who are at risk of losing their children following domestic violence. Most  of all, the Stay Safe East community helps sutvivors develop a positive self confidence as disabled people. For disabled women, it is a move from being invisible to the world to being out in the community and no longer apologising for being who they are.

 Stay Safe East's Women's Group has already raised over £600 by holding a May Spring Fair.  

What you money will pay for

The money you donate will go directly towards supporting Stay Safe East's clients , not on administration or other costs.

£5 will pay a volunteer's expenses to meet up with an isolated disabled women who is too anxious to go out of her home because of her experience of abuse

£ 10 pays for a  cab for a disabled woman to get to the Stay Safe East office to meet her advocate if she can't use public transport 

£20 will pay for emergency food for a disabled man whose benefits have been stopped because he didn't understand the form he was sent by the DWP after he fled domestic violence

£27 is the full cost of an hour's advocacy to support a disabled victim of hate crime

£50 is the cost of an emergency pack of bedding, toiletries and other essentials  for a woman fleeing domestic violence placed in temporary accommodation

£76 is the cost of a Bengali interpreter for the Stay Safe Women's group which helps break down isolation and provides much needed peer support for disabled women .

£100 will help a disabled woman with no recourse to public funds and living on £35 a week to attend classes for three months, and help maintain her mental and physical health
