Nearly everybody in Suffolk will know of the wonderful work St Elizabeth Hospice does for those suffering from progressive or life-limiting illness, both in its premises in Ipswich & Beccles and indeed throughout the community. Last year, the hospice cared for over 3,000 Suffolk patients and their families at a cost of £12.9m, of which 70% has to be raised by the community through their shops and local fundraising – income-generating activities which are now impossible due to social distancing and self-isolation.
In order to replace some of the funding St Elizabeth Hospice has lost as a result of Covid-19, I have planned a Cycling Mission from 1st February to 31st March in conjunction with "Keep Moving Suffolk" - in which everyone can participate. The challenge is to cycle the equivalent of the 272km (170 mile) round trip which would cover every one of the hospice’s 31 shops and premises throughout East and Mid-Suffolk. As none of us can actually make this journey at the moment due to Covid (as I had originally planned to do), it has to be done virtually - on a regular, electric or exercise bike - by recording the distance you cycle locally (or on your exercise bike) during these two months on a mobile phone application (for instance Strava). All participants will be entered into a draw for two VIP tickets to watch the final stage of the Women’s Cycle Tour as it arrives in Felixstowe on June 12th this year.
